Today I Learned · by Chloe Davis · 2026-10-09

My favorite low-effort upgrade for history without making it complicated

Part of me wanted the fancy version with all the tools. The better version was boring: one notebook, one reminder, and a willingness to be clumsy with the recipe for a while.

Part of me wanted the fancy version with all the tools. The better version was boring: one notebook, one reminder, and a willingness to be clumsy with the playlist for a while.

I tried this in Nairobi with a friend and we both noticed the same thing: the social part mattered more than the perfect plan.

I had a disappointing first try, a surprisingly good second try, and then a third attempt that taught me humility. So, naturally, I now have opinions.

That last line is excellent. This is more useful on a tired rainy evening than on a perfect day. I needed this reminder today.

I disagree a bit. effort matters, but the bigger issue is usually expectations. The messy part is easy to underestimate.

Did anyone else read this and immediately make a tiny checklist?

Maybe, but the tradeoff seems bigger than the post suggests. My friend tried it in Melbourne and had the opposite result.

Can you expand on that a bit?

Agree completely. The simple version is underrated. Honestly, the simplest version wins for me.

I wonder how much of this depends on timing. I learned that one the expensive way.
