My 8-month experiment with marathon that actually stuck

A few notes from my attempt:
- keep the first step visible
- remove one annoying decision
- celebrate the boring repeat

I had a disappointing first try, a surprisingly good second try, and then a third attempt that taught me humility. So, naturally, I now have opinions.

Context: I am not an expert, just someone trying to make Running feel less intimidating. I wrote down what worked, what felt awkward, and what I would do differently next time.

I know this is a tiny sample size, but after 8 attempts the pattern is pretty clear. When I keep the setup simple, I actually follow through.

I love this. It feels practical without pretending life is neat. I care less about the perfect answer and more about repeatability.

I had the same reaction to answer.

What happened after the first week? I am curious whether actually stayed easy. The Cape Town example makes it feel concrete. This is kinder advice than most of the internet manages.

Exactly; the hidden cost is energy.

I think both things can be true.

What would you change if you started over?

Big fan of this approach. It reminds me of a very specific conversation near a tiny balcony.

You explained the tradeoff really clearly. A little friction removed goes a long way. Glad you shared the messy version too.

I needed the reminder to start smaller.

I would push back gently on the actually part. I noticed the same thing in Nairobi.
