Is there a simple rule of thumb for study without overthinking it?
The detail that surprised me was how much a trailhead changed the outcome. Same plan, different setting, completely different energy.
Part of me wanted the fancy version with all the tools. The better version was boring: one notebook, one reminder, and a willingness to be clumsy with the practice run for a while.

Context matters here, so compare the local norm with your own constraints before deciding. The trap is trying to optimize before you have feedback.
- Do ten minutes daily instead of one giant weekend session.
- Save phrases you actually want to say.
- Speak badly on purpose; fluency needs reps.
That should give you a solid first pass.

Check the neighborhood at the time of day you will actually use it. A place can feel totally different at 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. My only addition is to make the first step visible.

For travel days, leave one flexible block. The best thing on a trip is often the thing you did not schedule. This would have saved me a lot of trial and error.

Learn a few local phrases and one apology phrase. People are usually generous when they see you trying. The low-effort version is probably the keeper.

That is fair, but I still worry about maintenance.

I needed the reminder to start smaller.

For travel days, leave one flexible block. The best thing on a trip is often the thing you did not schedule. The quiet Sunday version is even more interesting.

That is a good question for people with more experience than me. I keep a note about study for exactly this reason.

Come back with what happened; the details will make the next answer better.
