Green Flag / Red Flag · by Quiet Baker · 2026-10-30

His whole family shares live location in one WhatsApp group and now they want me in it

Dating a guy in Istanbul for 7 months (I'm 27F, he's 29M, both Turkish but I grew up in Izmir and my family is much more "everyone does their own thing"). His family has a WhatsApp group called "Aile 🧿" where his mom, dad, two sisters, his teyze and him all share live location. Permanently. His mom checks it if someone is late and calls them.

Last Sunday at kahvaltı his mom said "kızım we added you, just accept it" and he said it's only for safety, nobody actually watches it.

His sister then said "I saw you two were in Kadıköy until 3am on Friday" 🙂

Is this a sweet family thing or am I about to never have privacy again

American here, I would literally move to another city. 3am in Kadıköy being reported at breakfast is my nightmare

"nobody actually watches it" and then the sister immediately proves everyone watches it. red

the sister did you a favour honestly, she showed you the terms and conditions before you signed

the 🧿 in the group name is protecting nobody's privacy

7 months in and they're already tracking you. what happens when you're married

what happens is his mom shows up with soup when you're sick before you even told anyone. that's the upside, I'm Turkish and I'll take it

turkish here, my family does exactly this. it's love, it's annoying love. my mom once called me because my dot didn't move for 40 minutes, she thought I died. I was napping

same in Iran, my khaleh texted me "why are you at the hospital" when I was at the dentist

the flag isn't the family, it's that he didn't ask you first. he let his mom announce it at breakfast

OP here, to be fair he looked embarrassed. later he told me "you can say no, I will handle my mom"

ok that changes it. a guy who says "I will handle my mom" is green

accept it and pause your location when you want. that's what my whole generation in Ankara does lol

my Lebanese family has the same group and it's honestly saved us twice. once when my cousin's car broke down on the highway at night

honestly this is a family that wants to include you. in a lot of places that's the dream. you can negotiate the details
