He met my babcia and dziadek and brought five tulips, not four, because he googled it
I'm Polish but grew up in Chicago, moved back to Kraków last year. My boyfriend is Irish (from Cork). Last weekend he met my grandparents for the first time in Nowa Huta. Without telling me he:
- googled Polish grandparent etiquette
- brought 5 tulips because even numbers are for funerals
- brought a bottle of żubrówka for dziadek
- took his shoes off at the door and accepted the guest kapcie like a man
- learned "smacznego" and "dziękuję, było pyszne" and said them maybe 14 times total
Babcia made pierogi ruskie and he ate 19. She kept putting more on his plate and he thought refusing would be rude, so he just kept going. He was sweating. He told me after he couldn't feel his legs.
Dziadek asked him (through me) if he's Catholic and he said "Irish", which dziadek accepted as a yes.
My mom thinks it's a bit much, like he's trying too hard. I think I'm going to marry him

"Irish" being accepted as Catholic is the best part of this whole story

Ukrainian here, same rule with flowers. my ex once brought my mom 6 roses. we don't talk about it

the odd number of flowers thing is so niche. he did actual research. green green green

OP here, she called my mom the next day and said "ten Irlandczyk to dobry chłopak, tylko chudy"

"good boy, just skinny" means she's going to feed him until he's not. welcome to the family

the kapcie acceptance is key. a man who refuses guest slippers has something to hide

bit of devils advocate: I'd be slightly weirded out he did all this secretly instead of just asking you. feels a little performative

he wanted it to be a surprise for her too, that's kind of the point

19 pierogi out of respect. this man would die for you

as a pole I can tell you the correct move is to leave ONE on the plate. but nobody tells foreigners that and babcia knows it

babcia was testing his limits and he passed by not having any

trying too hard is only a flag when it's fake. googling flower etiquette for your grandma isn't fake, it's effort

In Ireland eating 19 of anything your gran gives you is a basic requirement. he was raised right
